Tips to maintain a Budget in Copenhagen

Is Copenhagen beautiful – YES! Is Copenhagen fun – YES! Is Copenhagen expensive – YES! It’s the last of these rhetorical questions that visitors need worry about while in Copenhagen. Staying on a budget where a can of coke can cost you 4 bucks is difficult. However, there are ways that will be suggested below that should help you stay at least close to your budget for your time in Copenhagen.

BikesCopenhagenPick up a Bike

Using public transport in Copenhagen is expensive. A way around that is to rent bicycles. They can be rented and brought to another location for a relatively cheap 20 Danish Kronner fee as a deposit. Above saving money, seeing the city on the back of bike is a great way to get connected to it and feel like a local.

Visit Copenhagen’s Museums on their Free Days

Different museums and art galleries around the city have free days. For instance the Thorvalden Museum, known for housing the sculptors of Berthal Thorvaldsen, is free on Wednesdays. The NY Calsberg Glyptoteket is free on Sundays. And, the National Museum located in the city centre is always free.

See Free Music at a Cafe

Several cafes around Copenhagen offer free live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. A few good examples are Cafe Retro and Cafe Zusammen, which offers local folk and rock acts paired with cheap food, drinks and a great atmosphere. There also free concerts and events in Christiania – Copenhagen’s bohemian, open minded “free” town.

Picnic in the Park

Do as the Danes do and enjoy a nice warm day sitting in the park. Drinking in public is permitted so don’t worry about hiding your beers as you sit in one of Copenhagen’s many beautiful parks. Make your way to one of the cities supermarkets like Netto and pick up some things to munch and a few cold beers – Dansk beer is the cheapest.

Do some Shopping in Nørrebrogade

Nørrebrogade is the bohemian corridor of Copenhagen and affords a variety of good options for finding food, clothes, or whatever else you need. Want something to eat quick grab one of the many shawarmas available. If you want to buy food to cook with check out one of the Turkish grocers in this area – the values are amazing compared to normal grocery stores. Note that on Saturday their also large flea markets in various areas of Nørrebrogade.

Go to the Beach

If you take the Metro towards the Lufthavnen, the airport, you can get off at Amager Strand station which is a five minute walk from Copenhagen’s beach.  Do as the locals do and set up a towel, bring a cooler and enjoy a cold beer in the Copenhagen sun.
