Tips for not Having Things Stolen

If you have ever had anything stolen on a trip you will know that it is definitely a way to spoil the great times that you have had. A stolen item leaves a horrid feeling of distaste towards a travel location as you now have been acquainted with that city’s darker side. Not only that, people that have something stolen are now more anxious and less relaxed for the rest of the trip and also hold themselves accountable for not being more cautious and heads up. Really the best things you can do while traveling is just not have your stuff taken. Here are a few ideas not to have things stolen.

backpackingCarry the most important things on you

Though someone would say this goes against the logic of having important things in separate places so you don’t lose everything, I say carry your most valuable things right on your person. Make your wallet the central storage location for the most valuable things – cash and cards – then guard that wallet well. Even passports are best in your pocket than free and loose in a bag that could be stolen. The idea here is hold your most valuable things close so you can be constantly vigilant to protect them. Also, if you can help it – and this can be a little tricky because of the expense of using your debit card to take out international money – try not to carry to much actual cash on you. Remember, a lot of places accept Visa without any additional fee to use it.

Sleep with your wallet

Maintaining a similar concept as above, if you are sleeping in a hostel sleep in something – pajamas or even shorts that have a pocket – then keep your wallet and passport in the pocket. Also, if the hostel has a safe you might want to put more valuable items like a passport and camera in there. Sleeping with your wallet means a would be thief will have to get it right off of you while you are asleep. Not to say it is impossible, but they would have to be pretty skillful and probably would want to move on to an easier target.

Keep valuable things in your carry on luggage

This goes especially on trains and buses, keep your most valuable things first in your pockets than inside your carry on bag that is right with you. One of the main techniques that thieves use to steal things is to take an entire bag from the bag stow under the bus. If there were valuable things like cameras and lap tops they would have a good take that is why it should be a constant strategy to keep those things right next to you at all times. Again, having to steal the bag from under your nose hopefully will be more trouble than a thief is interested in taking on.
