There are plenty of stereotypes about “Americans” – some of them true and other definitely a stretch. Perhaps that is one of the ways most to annoy an American is to beat them over the head with stereotypical ideas like they are truth. In a land were service is expected and consumer choice prevalent there definitely are ways to make an Americans blood boil like pasta water. A few more of them include.
Telling an American that the US doesn’t do anything good…
Outside of the US people will rag on about the variety of shady things the US has done politically around the world. Talk will focus on wars, oil, and forcing capitalism down a lot of nation’s throats. The truth is many Americans are willing to concede there are issues that need to be worked out. With that said, one thing that will definitely anger an American is to say the US doesn’t have anything good about it… The truth is that US entertainment culture has gotten all over the globe for a reason, its compelling. To claim that there is nothing good about a land of 350 million people is a way to piss them off right quick.
Making an American speak languages other than English
Even though Spanish is becoming extremely prevalent in the US, especially in the southern states, not being able to speak English will anger an American. With Hollywood presenting the image, that really if just coaxed a little, most everybody out of America can speak English. When this proves not to be the case often, it can certainly lead to an increase in American levels of agitation.
Telling an American they are “just” American
Despite the immigrant past where people came to the US and were thrown into the proverbial melting pot only to come out as American people do not like being disconnected to their idea of their ethnic roots. So often the question will be raised, so what ethnicity are you? If you have seen Jersey Shore before you know that along with the Red, White, and Blue a lot of Americans wear their ethnicity loud and proud too. So what that in mind one way to annoy a lot of Americans is to discount their cultural heritage – even if said heritage is so distant it couldn’t be seen with the Hubble Space Telescope – and say they are just American. Fair enough in a land of individuality connecting to a unique past separate from a lot of your country men takes on more relevance.
