Hamburg is well known for having Europe’s second most infamous Red Light District the Reeperbahn. There’s a lot of night life both regular and grotty surrounding this area. This article is going to look at some other spots around the city however that you can come and wet your whistle. Hamburg is one of Germany’s largest and most cosmopolitan cities so it can’t be much surprise that there are lots of cool spots. Here are a few different options.
Na Und?

Perhaps something that is missing in North America is the kind of bar that you can walk into at 7 am hammered drunk and get more grog. Nu und, literally meaning – So what?, fills this niche. When you stumble in you will be met by Klaus the chain smoking bartender who will try to set you up with another drink regardless of your state. Set in the colourful St Pauli neighborhood of Hamburg the bar is a mixture of locals – many of them who look like they have been in the place for years – and trendy people. An interesting time is always assured here.
Mutter
Stressemanstrasse 11, 22769
Mutter is a dingy old dive that somehow maintains a homely and comfortable mystique to it. You’ll find little pretense in here and many a well sat in couches. The Hamburg School a late 80’s/early 90’s punk/experimental punk group use this place as their regular head quarters. Everyone remotely interested in this group come here and hang out and enjoy some cheap drinks and ambiance.
Grüner Jäger

Grüner Jäger is Hamburgs best location for seeing Indie music live. The building itself is interesting set in an old forester cabin, presumably when this was the outskirts of the city. Summer time there is a large patio where people sit and drink down Astra beer (the cheap beer option of Hamburg) and have a laugh. In the winter people move inside to the lounge and the sofas. Wednesday nights are an interesting one to check out when entry is free and newcomer bands take to the stage. On weekends local hip hop, DJs and established bands will perform and their will be a few Euro cover charge.
