Autonomous sensory meridian response, commonly known as ASMR, is a sensory experience characterized by a tingling sensation beginning on the scalp and moving down the back of the neck and spine.
The acronym ASMR signifies Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response which refers to a tingling sensation felt mainly on the head in response to various audio-visual stimuli like whispering, tapping, or hand movements.
ASMR, a relatively novel phenomenon, induces feelings of tingling relaxation triggered by videos or sounds of individuals engaging in mundane, soothing activities such as folding towels, brushing hair, turning magazine pages, or engaging in crafts like drawing, embroidery, and knitting, among others. The calming sounds of tapping, scratching, or rain can also evoke this response.
Not everyone can experience ASMR; however, for those who do, it typically starts from the scalp and spreads through the body, promoting a sense of relaxation that may aid in alleviating insomnia.
