Not everything is perfect…not even your vacation. Sometimes, unavoidable things happen. As unfortunate as that may be, it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. Did your taxi not show up? Did your flight get cancelled? Don’t ruin the rest of your trip by stressing out. Instead, it’s time to learn what to do your trip go wrong.
Look Into Preventive Measures Beforehand
To avoid dealing with a bad trip, it is important to do a little research before you book anything. For instance, look into the policies that each tour group, travel agent, and airline offers. Do they cover cancellations? Provide refunds? Re-book or re-schedule reservations if necessary? The odds aren’t high that you will actually need to know these things…but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
So, something has gone wrong. Maybe your flight was cancelled, your tour group left without you, your luggage was lost, or the weather has wrecked havoc on the city that you were planning to visit. Whatever has gone wrong, you will need to know who to contact and when. Instead of wasting time calling people you don’t really need to speak to, it is important to have those necessary numbers on hand.
Make note of the travel agency that you booked with, the airline, hotel, and so on. Be sure to have those numbers with you. They shouldn’t just be the general line though. Make sure that you have customer service numbers on hand. This will save you some time in the event of an emergency. It is also important that you phone as soon as there is a problem. If you leave it too late, they may not be able to help you!
Don’t Complain to Fellow Travellers
While it’s true that a bad travel experience can be frustrating, there is a right and a wrong way to deal with it. The worst thing that you can do is turn to another traveller and start complaining or saying things like, “This company is the worst. They did….” Not only will this make the other travellers feel very uncomfortable, but it will also make you look petty and childish. In order for the wrong to be made right, it is important that you behave like an adult at all times.
Speak to Others Rationally
That last point links directly to this next one: speak to others rationally. If you are talking to an employee or manager, be polite and as calm as possible. Many places simply will not deal with someone who is yelling and screaming at them. If you want results, then the best course of action is to be firm – but reasonable. You want people to help you. They simply won’t do that if you don’t give them a reason to!
Be a Little Flexible
You may have planned out every single aspect of your vacation. However, things aren’t necessarily going to fall right into place. If that happens, you need to learn to be a little flexible. Say that your hotel got your booking wrong and you are now in a room without a view of the ocean. Yes, this is annoying…but will it make or break your vacation? Do your best to resolve the issue and then try to make peace with the end result. Instead of letting small things ruin your whole trip, try to move past them. That way, you can enjoy your vacation…even when things go wrong.
Sometimes, things go wrong. When it happens, the most important thing is to find solutions. Be sure to make the most of your trip, whatever it may bring.
