Pointers for Eating in Venice

With it’s winding alleys and one of a kind setting, it’s hard not to fall in love with Venice as soon as you cross the water. Whether you arrive by car, train or boat, an adventure in Venice will guarantee that you spend a lot of time on your feet because aside from a few special areas, there are no cars here. The beauty of this is you’re sure to build up quite an appetite from all that walking around!

Venice has gotten a bad rap over the years for not having very good food but this is an unfair assessment that most will find easy to disagree with. For a city that is heavily tourist focused with most of them arriving after breakfast but before dinner, Venice could be forgiven for not putting much effort into their cuisine, but in truth you can get fantastic offerings whenever you go out.

Take a look at these tips for enjoying great food in this surreal Italian locale!

Chain or not – it’s fantastic!

If you arrive by train and are feeling a bit hungry, you’re in luck – there are pretty good restaurants as soon as you enter the city. Head left down one of the main streets and you’ll find cafes, restaurants and markets galore – each offering something different and for a decent price.

Stay Away from the Heavily Crowded Areas if Possible

The crowds are everywhere in Venice, particularly on the main routes that lead the way to Rialto and St. Marco’s. At times it can be a bit much, especially during peak season, because the alleyways and bridges aren’t really wide enough for that many people to be piling through at once, yet still there are places to get food and drinks. If you want any sense of privacy or just not to be suffocated by the day trippers and tour boat crowds, head away from the main areas to find your food. You would think others would do something similar but for the most part, nobody does.

Back Alleys are Your Friend!

Ignore everything you think you know about back alleys and taking paths that seem deserted as a sign for bad times ahead – in Venice, a city almost entirely made up of alleys and refuges from crowds, this is where you want to be. It’s also great for dining as many restaurants pour out onto the street and situate themselves away from the thoroughfare, giving you a chance to enjoy the quaint charm of dining in Venice.

You Can Never Have Too Much Gelato

Purists out there will tell you the only gelato is that from Naples and Venice gelato is sub par, but these are the same people who say the food in Venice is terrible – they are people I don’t care to associate with! How can you seriously go wrong with gelato? Enjoying this rich treat as you wander around the amazing city, gazing out across the Grand Canal. It’s hard to get any better than this.

If you want to make use of the markets and prepare your own Venetian culinary delights, GoWithOh has a number of top notch apartments in the heart of the city.
