There is no money tree that I have been able to find, which is unfortunate, but such is life. Because of this, I have had to find ways to cut costs on my holidays, because I refuse to not have a holiday, and would rather find a bargain than go without!
We all know that flight costs fluctuate, and whilst when you find that cheap fare you might want to jump for joy, when you see the costs going through the roof as you’re trying to find an affordable flight, it can be somewhat upsetting. Luckily there are ways you can get around this, and find a cheap deal, by simply being a little flexible.
Cutting overall costs on your travel plans will help no end, so I would always suggesting looking at cheaper ways to get from home to the airport. I drive myself, because I find this much less stressful, and it saves me money when compared to the cost of trains and coaches, not to mention expensive taxis. Driving yourself also gives you the option of leaving from an alternative airport to the one you would normally use. For instance, if you do a Skyscanner search for flights from the UK, it will show you all the flights from different airports, and the ones at the top of the list are the cheapest. You might find that your airport is somewhere in the middle of the list, or even at the bottom, so why not open up your search and possibly fly from a different terminal? If you’re driving this is easier, because you can travel at your leisure, and do the parking up thing. Obviously you need to weigh up the pros and cons, and see how much extra it is going to cost you in petrol, but if the saving is still considerable, then maybe it’s time to stray a little further from your usual airport habits.
You will have no doubt noticed that London airports are often cheaper than more regional ones, so if you can find a deal that saves you big, even factoring in the extra travel costs, then go for it. I’ve done this before and it wasn’t a massive impact on my travel day to be honest.
There is also the option of split booking, i.e. booking two one way flights, rather than searching for a return, as this occasionally comes up cheaper.
You have to be clever when saving money, but if you’re open to new ideas and a little flexible, there’s no reason why you can’t keep precious money in your pocket instead.
